This was a short I made a couple years ago when I was a student. It was inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender. I noticed that there were alot of firebending videos on YouTube but they were all using premade assets not simulations. So I decided to make the first one that used simulations. I did not understand what I was taking on when I started. We filmed over the course of a few days in June. Then I worked on the VFX until december. Most of the time was actually used up in baking and rendering the simulations. They were all done in Blender 2.79 (shows the age of the video). The flames weren't perfect right out of Blender, there was a lot of post done on them in After Effects. Including adding the sparks with Trapcode particular. This was shot on a Canon DSLR so there wasn't much dynamic range. I wasn't happy having a blown out white sky for the whole thing, that didn't fit in with the aesthetic of the show. So a large part of the work was replacing the sky and adding matte paintings. Naturally, if I had to work on it now I could improve it in all sorts of ways. . Especially considering that the flames weren't the only VFX. However, as a zero budget project with one VFX artist, attending school, I think it turned out pretty well.
